Gama Aviation – Improving energy efficiency across zoned heating systems

Gama Aviation wanted to improve control and reduce energy costs across its facility. By introducing centralised control with advanced savings strategies, we helped them achieve a 19% reduction in energy use, saving around 40 tonnes of carbon.

Context

Gama Aviation provides aviation support services to individuals, corporations, and government agencies. Founded in 1983, the company operates on a principle of precision, reliability, and dedication to its clients’ missions.

During our initial site survey, we reviewed the heating setup and identified several opportunities to improve energy efficiency. The site was divided into eight zones, heated by a combination of warm air blowers and an oil-fired boiler. Each unit was managed by a basic controller, offering limited functionality and no active savings strategies.

The challenge was to introduce a solution that could optimise performance, reduce waste, and offer remote management across all zones, without disrupting daily operations.

Solution

We designed and installed a central control panel to link all heating zones into a single coordinated system. Each zone was fitted with an internal temperature sensor to provide accurate feedback and improve control.

To further enhance efficiency, we implemented several key savings strategies. Door switches were integrated with the hangar bay doors, automatically pausing heating when doors were open. Residual heat utilisation was activated to keep fans running after the burners switched off, maintaining temperature by circulating existing warm air.

We also installed an external temperature sensor to enable weather compensation, ensuring the system adjusted automatically to outdoor conditions and maintained efficiency throughout the year. Remote access was included to give management full visibility and control from any connected device.

Impact

The installation provided Gama Aviation with complete control over their heating system and the ability to monitor performance in real time.

Our initial assessment projected savings of 25% and a payback period of around seven months, equating to a reduction of roughly 73 tonnes of carbon. After a year of operation, fuel analysis confirmed a 19% energy saving, reducing emissions by approximately 40 tonnes.

The system has improved reliability, reduced energy costs, and provided a foundation for continued carbon reduction across the site.
