Context

As part of the multinational Brother Group, Brother Industries supplies technology solutions including printers, scanners and label printers to businesses worldwide.

Brother plans to transition to electric heating as part of wider sustainability initiatives. Ahead of that move, the business identified immediate efficiency gains it could make in its current gas heating system.

The site comprised 15 heating zones, including thirty-three Ambirad radiant tubes and six large warm-air blowers. At over 15 years old, the radiant heating was likely contributing to inefficiencies and higher running costs.

Significant temperature imbalances were also identified, affecting staff comfort during colder months.

Solution

ArcSett carried out a detailed site survey to understand how the building used heating and identify where control improvements would have the greatest impact.

ArcSett installed its energy control system, connecting all heaters to a central control unit that could be managed on-site or remotely. Because the site combines radiant and warm air heating, ArcSett fitted specialised temperature sensors to measure temperature accurately and distribute heat effectively across each area, supported by an external sensor for weather compensation and pre-heat adjustment.

Impact

The new controls gave Brother advanced control and optimisation strategies, driving an immediate reduction in consumption and cost. While the long-term goal remains electrification, Brother has cut gas demand significantly – and won’t need to replace the control layer when that transition happens.

The installation achieved a 48% reduction, significantly surpassing the initial forecast of 25%, and delivered full payback within 22 months.

The highest-performing month achieved a 67% energy saving, showing just how much the controls can improve site performance.

ArcSett gave Brother Industries fast, measurable savings today without compromising its plans for tomorrow. By tackling inefficiencies in the existing gas system, Brother has cut costs, improved staff comfort and put a control layer in place that’s ready to support electrification whenever that transition begins.
