BEL Valves – Cutting energy waste and improving heating control across site operations

BEL Valves wanted tighter temperature control and greater efficiency to support its cost and carbon savings goals. By installing ArcSett’s energy controls, BEL Valves cut consumption and costs by 44% and paid back its investment within 11 months.

Context

BEL Valves designs, manufactures and maintains high-integrity valves, actuators and controls for subsea, surface and onshore applications. Based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the company is part of the British Engines Group and supplies clients across the global oil and gas industry.

With energy prices rising sharply, BEL Valves saw a significant increase in its annual gas spend. Reducing and protecting itself against rising costs was a key priority, alongside the business’s wider commitment to cutting its carbon footprint.

The facilities team recognised that the existing heating system needed better control and efficiency. Basic timers ran the heating, with no temperature sensors in key areas to prevent overheating. With so many heaters to programme individually, the team had limited flexibility, and heaters sometimes ran for longer than needed.

Solution

ArcSett connected 20 heaters to a centralised control unit, giving the facilities team greater visibility and control across the heating system. The team could manage the whole heating estate through the online portal and set advanced schedules with ease.

ArcSett installed an external weather sensor to enable weather compensation, so heating responded automatically to outdoor conditions. Roller door sensors linked to nearby heaters too, cutting unnecessary heat loss whenever doors opened.

Localised temperature sensors on each heater improved accuracy and stopped heaters overshooting their target temperature. ArcSett fitted ATEX-rated sensors in certain areas to meet the site’s operational requirements.

Impact

The new control system gave BEL Valves efficient, centralised control of its heating equipment, with improved temperature accuracy and ease of use.

ArcSett initially forecast savings of at least 25%, with the potential to reach 43%. After a full winter season, analysis showed energy use had fallen by 44% – beating even that upper estimate – delivering over £33K in cost savings and 139 tonnes of carbon saved.

Monthly performance demonstrated the potential for even greater savings, with consumption reduced by 62% in April alone.

The result: a more energy-efficient working environment that supports BEL Valves’ cost and carbon goals, while delivering clear operational and financial benefits.
